2 more new vaccines (October 2005)

The FDA has approved a new tetanus booster which is normally given at 11-12 years of age and every 10 year after that.  This time the vaccine will include the "whooping cough" or pertussis vaccine.  This illness is not as serious as in young infants but still can cause a nuisance called "the 100 day cough".  Since teenage pertussis is at a 30 year high and can easily spread to young infants and cause a more serious life threatening condition, it is now recommended that teenagers get this new vaccine.  If you child has gotten the tetanus booster without the pertussis component, please wait 5 years from the last tetanus vaccine to get the new one.

The other new vaccine combines the MMR and Varicella(chicken pox) vaccines into a single vaccine, MMRV, marketed as ProQuad.

New Vaccine for Teenagers ( May 2005)

The FDA has approved a new vaccine, Menactra, for use in adolescents.  The vaccine will help protect teens from meningococcal diseases including meningitis.  Your child will be eligible to receive the vaccine during routine physical exams if they fall into the following age categories:

Age 11-12, Age 15(or entering high school), Age 18-19( or entering college)
